Donald Trump has been working to end the war in Ukraine since before he took office. After being sworn in as president on Monday, Robert Wilkie, the head of Trump’s transition team at the Pentagon, indicated that the effort is ongoing. He said that Trump will call Russian President Vladimir Putin and ask him to stop the war.
Robert Wilkie participated in the BBC’s Today program on Tuesday. He said that Trump will also call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop the war.
Wilkie said that if Putin does not respond to Trump’s call to stop the war, the United States will use its own energy resources. He said that the United States will then start supplying liquefied natural gas to Europe. And the presence of the United States in the global oil market will cause oil prices to fall, which will bankrupt the Russian economy.
The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for almost three years. After taking office, Trump promised to stop the war within 24 hours. After winning the election, he appointed a representative to stop the war. Trump’s efforts are also being made to broker a peace deal around this war. However, analysts believe that it will take time for Moscow and Kiev to reach a consensus to end the war.
