Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday (January 20). Officials from Meloni’s office announced the decision on Friday.
Meloni met Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, earlier this month. Trump praised Meloni after the meeting. He described her as a “wonderful woman.”
It was therefore expected that Meloni would attend Trump’s inauguration. Through this, the leader of the conservative Italian party will further strengthen his relationship with Trump.
World leaders do not usually attend the inauguration of US presidents, but rather send diplomats as their representatives. But Trump broke tradition by inviting several world leaders to his inauguration.
Along with Meloni, Argentine President Javier Miel has also confirmed his attendance at Trump’s inauguration, according to various media reports. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was also invited. But a spokesman for him said last week that he would not attend Trump’s inauguration. Meloni, Javier and Viktor Orban are known Trump supporters.
Chinese President Xi Jinping was also invited to Trump’s inauguration on January 20. He is also not going. But he is sending an envoy.
Meloni’s supporters hope that his relationship with Trump will grow over the next four years. He will play a role in keeping the relationship between the United States and Europe dynamic.
